What do I need in a fundraising plan? It's a question Tailored Coaches get asked often.

Ideally, you have unique plans for different groups or segments of donors. And you may even have personalized plans for each major donor on your caseload. But the basic grouping categories consist of affinity, geography, and capacity.

If you can identify where each donor falls in each category, it will help you create segments, as well as fundraising plans, that work for your donors.

Affinity is simply identifying the strength of the relationship. How well do they know you or your organization? How are they involved?

Geography is pretty simple. Where are they located?

Lastly, capacity is simply how much do they give?

There are plenty of platforms that can do formal research. But I like to start with the question, "What would be a generous amount for this person to consider?" That usually gets the juices flowing. If you can group donors using these three categories, you can definitely start developing a solid fundraising plan.
