Too many times I hear about non-profits that have plenty of funding for "projects" but they struggle to keep their doors open because they can't pay for rent for their office. Or they don't have enough support personnel to keep the executive from burning out.

It's just crazy! And there's a simple solution.

Don't try to sustain your mission by asking donors only to fund projects.

When you're considering funding a new initiative, calculate the Total Cost of Impact. Simply put, include both direct AND indirect costs. And fundraise that way!

When funding increases, impact increases and vice versa. Donors are smart. They know that it's impossible to only include direct costs in fundraising. When you make this shift in your funding paradigm, it instantly makes your fundraising a sustainable way to maintain the costs of a non-profit.
